I’m worried about Lamar Odom

by Patton on January 27, 2012

When Odom was traded from the Lakers to the Mavs, I was concerned.  He seemed like he was really upset that he was being moved out of LA.  Plus, he’s always been kind of sensitive.  So, this comes as no surprise, but it is kind of sad and concerning.  Lamar was talking about his recent slump:

“I just missed shots I normally make.  It’s kind of like an exclamation for the start of the season for myself. I’m not myself yet.

“All I can do is remain patient. An old friend of mine used to tell me, ‘It’s not what you’re gonna do. It’s what can you do. What can you do?’

Jamie Benn’s appendectomy came just at the wrong time for the young Canadian, as it lead to his first all-star appearance being in doubt. However, Jamie had a very speedy and successful recovery and is now in Ottawa ahead of the all-star weekend, with the draft just taking place. The skills competition takes place tomorrow and the game itself takes place on Sunday, with Jamie Benn of the Stars featuring in both

Last night the Mavs got their 2011 Championship rings in a 15-minute pre-gam ceremony. Now you can watch the complete ceremony courtesy of Fox Sports Southwest:

NFC East Pride

by Patton on January 26, 2012

Ok, the Giants are in the Super Bowl, and though it is hard to watch a team from your division go to the Super Bowl, there is a little bit of pride in the fact that your division has such good teams.  It begs the question:

Is the NFC East as good as we all pretend that it is?

Well, let’s forgive the Cowboys their faults for a minute and realize that they are relevant and they do not suck.  They have good players, and people know they are dangerous.

Texas Extends Brown

by Patton on January 25, 2012

Martin Warriors
Mack Brown and Texas have a new extension in place, but that isn’t the interesting part.  The interesting part is that he’s not retired yet.  He had a coach-in-waiting in Will Muschamp.  Muschamp went to Florida.  Now, Brown has no one like that under contract, so he’s staying.  Is that truly wise?

Mack Brown isn’t exactly a spring chicken, and there’s a point at which your effectiveness runs out.  Just ask Bobby Bowden.  Plus, I would hate to see a Joe Paterno-like situation at Texas.  (Not the scandal, just, he gets let go and his heart can’t take it.)  I think that would be really sad.

It was announced yesterday that Alex Golisgoski has signed a 4 year $18.4 million contract, keeping him in Dallas until the end of the 2015-16 campaign. Goligoski has been one of Dallas’ standout defenseman this season and is a crucial ingredient in a decent defensive unit that the Stars have formed

Goligoski arrived in Texas after departing the Pittsburgh Penguins at the back end of last season. The Pens received James Neal and Matt Niskanen as part of the deal. James Neal showed a lot of promise as a Star but struggled to be a big points scorer alongside Jamie Benn and Brad Richards and was subsequently traded. A lot of the Stars fan base felt that the trade was a stupid one, but I firmly felt that Alex was just the man that the Stars had missed since Sergei Zubov left Dallas.

Ok, I like Mark Cuban, but I don’t think he understands the implications of what’s going on.  Sure, he can probably turn things around in a heartbeat, but really?  Cuban was asked what the deal is with Dirk’s knee, and he said:

“It’s not about his knee. His knee wasn’t feeling well, but that’s a symptom of everything else.  So, it’s not like there’s some problem. Even if it was his head, we would still do the exact same thing.”

How bad is it?  I mean, we know that Dirk is getting older, he’s very tall, and those knees have many miles of basketball on them.  Part of it could be the way the season is scheduled.  That’s normal.  I can see that.  You take the time that he has been playing, you add his height to that, you multiply times infinity, and you have how bad his knees hurt.  However, is this something to be worried about or just a little precaution because they want to be careful?  I mean, the schedule is messed up.

Who prefers Hamilton to Fielder?

by Patton on January 22, 2012

Oh yeah, someone who’s writing the checks.

Bob Simpson, co-chairman of the board of the Texas Rangers, says that he would rather have Josh Hamilton over Prince Fielder.  Why you ask?  Well, read his comments on the subject:

“We’ve got guys, frankly, like Josh Hamilton that I would love to see re-signed.  My personal preference, at this moment, would be to re-sign him instead of having Fielder. But we could all debate that.”

“Everybody dreams about having both. Sometimes you can’t have both at some level. If they came around to something we’d do, we’d look at him. But we don’t think it’s likely.”

It was announced today that the Mavs’ German star, Dirk Nowitzki, will be out for the next 4 games to rest a sore knee that has been nagging him for a while. Coach Rick Carlisle spoke about his power forward today and said that Dirk wants to carry on playing, but the medical staff feel a few games on the sidelines would benefit him in the long term, similarly to Jason Kidd who missed a string of games not long ago.
