The Big 12 has offered its commissionership to Bob Bowlsby, Stanford’s athletic director. I won’t pretend to speak on what Bowlsby is capable of or what he brings to the table. I will simply ask one question that is not a judgment of Bowlsby or any other commissioner at all.
Does the commissioner really matter in Big 12 country?
I think Muffet McGraw’s comments were, not taken out of context, but just flat not understood. She said, of Brittney Griner:
“No, I think she’s one of a kind. I think she’s like a guy playing with women.”
“It’s just there’s so many things she can do that I’ve not seen a lot of women — well, really, you know, there’s been some guards that had some skill like that. But as a post player, she’s the best I’ve ever seen.”

I haven’t talked much about college sports here, but, I think Baylor is worth noting. It’s been such an uphill ride for the Bears since the murder scandal that saw one teammate kill another and a coach cover up things that were going on on this team. It’s easy to forget how bad it was at Baylor. Now, sports at Baylor are thriving. The women’s basketball team is amazing. Baylor calls the current Heisman Trophy winner its son, and the men’s basketball team is in the Elite Eight.
