Jason Garrett's Dilemma: Slow Grind or Shootout?

by DanielDessinger on December 19, 2009

Jason Garrett has his hands full today as the final preparations are made for tonight’s epic battle against the New Orleans Saints. In this matchup, one thing is certain: Drew Brees and his quiver full of weapons can score in less than two minutes at any time. The Saints have scored more touchdowns on first down than any other team in the NFL. It’s an insane percentage of their total.

Which begs the question: How will Garrett scheme to win?

Assuming he actually goes into games with an overarching strategy (which we haven’t really seen play out in most games this year), Red Jesus could either opt to grind it out with the running game and attempt to control the clock, or he could opt for a shootout and hope that Romo, Austin, and Choice can deliver enough of the goods to keep Dallas in the game.

If the Cowboys grind it out, they likely don’t score many points. Then, even if Brees has the ball for 5 minutes a quarter, I see them still putting up more points than Dallas.

If the Cowboys turn this into a shootout, is there any doubt that New Orleans will mop the floor with them? Dallas’ defense would have to come up huge, and that was unlikely even before Ware became questionable.

When there seems no good option, what do you do?
