My 2009 NFL Fantasy Draft Results

by DanielDessinger on August 10, 2009

As you no doubt read in the last post, I shared my Top 12 picks in this years FF draft prior to my league’s actual draft. Well, the draft has come and gone, and the results are in. In our league, you start three wide receivers and two running backs. Here’s how it worked out for me:

Round 1, Pick #9 – Frank Gore

Not a bad pick at #9, as all the top running backs were gone as expected.

Round 2, Pick #4 – Dwayne Bowe

I know someone somewhere is wondering why the heck I picked Bowe in Round 2. I can only tell you I’m playing a hunch.

Round 3, Pick #9 – Terrell Owens

This is an incredible pick at the 33rd pick in the draft. Hate the guy’s attitude and immaturity all you want, he gets fantasy results. I’m extremely happy with this one.

Round 4, Pick #4 – Marshawn Lynch

This pick is going to hurt me in the first leg of the season due to Lynch serving a suspension, but he’s top 6 or 7 caliber when he’s on the field, so I’m ecstatic to have him come off the bench in Week 5.

Round 5, Pick #9 – Chris Cooley

With so few tight ends in the league worth having, I took Cooley earlier than I normally would. With my top running backs and receivers already in the bag, I might have only picked him one round too early.

Round 6, Pick #4 – Matt Cassel

Possibly my biggest gamble of all. Cassel could be a complete wash this year with a weaker offensive line to protect him. I have my hopes up, though.

Round 7, Pick #9 – Dallas Defense

If Pittsburgh is off the table, I’ll take Dallas to compete with anyone this year on defense. I’m buyin’ what Mr. Fixit is sellin’.

Round 8, Pick #4 – Nick Folk

One of the best field goal kickers in the league. I’m very glad to have him on the team. Folk’s been my guy every year I could get him.

Round 9, Pick #9 – Kevin Walter

This 28 year old wide receiver for Houston definitely flew in under the radar. I picked him up as my third receiver, though he might sit the bench a few games based on schedule.

Round 10, Pick #4 – Darren Sproles

You can’t ask for a better backup running back. When LD goes down AGAIN with an injury, Sproles will kick some butt and take names. He’s got Felix Jones or better quickness. He’s definitely a playmaker, though not a 1,000 yard rusher unless LD is out for most of the season.

Round 11, Pick #9 – Martellus Bennett

Not sure if this was a mistake. Bennett has freakish athleticism and excellent hands, but playing 2nd fiddle to Jason Witten means we can’t be sure about his production. Would love to see some double TE and split wide out sets where the field is spread by four very excellent receiver options. But, as with every other Cowboys receiver, Bennett has to live with Romo who will get his numbers but not necessarily pass to any one receiver other than Witten very consistently.

Round 12, Pick #4 – Matt Hasselbeck

Another steal. Hasselbeck will be my starting QB. Upon further reflection, I wish I’d taken Derrick Ward or DeSean Jackson in Round 6 instead of Matt Cassell. I want Cassell in case he turns out to be a wunderkind on the Chiefs roster, but I expect consistent Top 10 QB stats from Hasselbeck.

Round 13, Pick #9 -Devery Henderson

Henderson is a solid pick this late in the draft. If one of my wide receivers needs to sit a week due to injury or a bye, Henderson will keep my head above water.

Round 14, Pick #4 – Percy Harvin

This rookie wide receiver for the Vikings could be the next best thing to sliced bread. Of course, he doesn’t have a single good quarterback on his team, so he’d be better off passing the ball to himself. Still, I’ll probably watch him during the first two games of the season and see if he’s able to mesh well with the QB and put up the points.

Round 15, Pick #9 – Chester Taylor

Vikings 2nd running back Chester Taylor would be a starting running back on some teams. He’s backup to the #1 rusher in the league, but he’ll play a vital role regardless of Peterson’s health. This is my dark horse if Peterson gets injured.

In answer to the poll, I took Clinton Portis. He’s the man. It’s unfortunate when the Redskins don’t feed him the ball. He’s a top 3 running back in my book. I might have voted Chris Johnson based on his reputation, but I haven’t gotten to see him play enough to cast my vote his direction.

I like the team other then Cassel. Sproles was a steal that is crazy since he does produce when he is on the field. In the poll, I took MJD. The guy is a beast and I usually get him when I can in my draft. Not sure if he will produce the same this year as opposed to previous since he is the true no 1 instead of splitting with Taylor.

You need some work on fantasy drafts. 1st word of advice is always let the draft come to you and do not force picks. 2nd use a value base draft and always take the best available player unless you have a big need at a position. Another example is when you picked the Dallas kicker in the 8th round, this was a huge force of a pick. I hate to say this but you are what they call dead money or an empty seat and will never ever win a fantasy football league.
