Nick Folk's Lament

by SteveHartline on December 18, 2009

nick-folkNick Folk is but a pawn for what ails the Cowboys. He has missed at least one field goal in each of the past four weeks. And to absolve himself, Folk laid full blame at the feet of his holder. Enter Romo, who has holding experience. While Romo may be adequate, he also has horrible experience as witnessed in the 2006 play-off game against Seattle. Despite memories of the past, Romo is manning up for the team. We appreciate that. But is it a band-aid to all that ills the Cowboys?

For the fifth week in a row Nick Folk missed yet another 3 pointer. It irked the organization so much that they’re trying out kickoff specialist David Buehler this week. It’s probably just a psychological move as Buehler has no real NFL experience in this area, but nonetheless, lame duck coach Phillips is grasping, trying.

In practice Tuesday, all three of Buehler’s attempts went wide right, some of them not even coming close. In contrast, Kicking from the same spots, Folk wasn’t much better, going 2 of 4.

Blame it on surgery? Folk did have offseason hip surgery, although he said his health is fine. He doesn’t have any specific reason for his problems, saying something different goes wrong every time. That sounds like a typical response from a Wade-o-phile: lets spew in detail what went wrong and lay blame elsewhere as opposed to offering the stiff upper lip and saying “My bad. I’m a man. I’ll do better”.

For the record, Buehler was 26 of 33 in field goal attempts over two years at Southern California.

“Eventually, to have longevity in this league, I need to be able to kick field goals,” Buehler said. “I’m not going to be a kickoff specialist my whole career. So I need to fine-tune that and be able to be a reliable field-goal kicker.”

“Most of all, it’s mental,” he said. “I mean, going out there and getting back into that rhythm and doing the consistent motion every single time. I’m going to be there if need be. Who knows when they’ll need me, if they’ll need me at all.”
