Let’s put this to rest once and for all. With the current roster, Dallas doesn’t need Lamar Odom. He doesn’t fit. Odom fits best at the 3 or 4. Let me remind you of the current starting five:
- Jason Kidd
- Josh Howard
- Shawn Marion
- Dirk Nowitzki
- Erick Dampier
Where do you put Lamar Odom? Sixth Man? Already taken by the league’s sixth man of the year, Jason Terry. Seventh man? Fat chance. No 7th man should make $10 million a year, which is what Odom and his agent are after.
So why is Mark Cuban saying he’s pursuing Odom? It makes no sense. UNLESS. Unless Dallas is prepared to play Dirk at the Center position OR unless Dallas intends to turn around and package Odom in a deal elsewhere for a true center. Dallas is already strongest at the 3 and the 4 position – the positions Odom plays.
You know who makes a LOT more sense? Carlos Boozer. He can at least play a position the Mavericks need. The Odom deal sounds like another result of social media’s sense of immediacy. Cuban’s probably throwing the fans a bone to chew on while he and Donnie work on something else.
