dirk nowitzki

A few days ago, Dirk was injured during the game against Houston. Dirk literally had a couple teeth embedded in his elbow. That is probably the first and last time I will ever use that sentence.

Dirk health update

ESPNDallas.com reports that coach Rick Carlisle has said they will revisit whether Dirk is ready to play before each game.

Nowitzki said he’s hoping for a Tuesday return.

“I’m on every pill there is,” he said. “We’ll just see how it responds. If it’s not Tuesday, definitely on [Saturday].”

I watched as much of the game as I could last night before I just had to get some sleep. So I missed the entire 4th Quarter and overtime as Dirk led his team to the win.

If you missed the entire game, or just a part, you can catch the entire replay right now at ESPN360.com. Not sure how long they’ll make the game available, but it’s the main banner image right now. So catch it anytime today if you can.

In case you missed the game but heard about the fade away jumper by Dirk at the buzzer, check out the video below.

Magic Mavericks BasketballAssociated Press - Vince Carter racked up 21 points in his Orlando debut and Brandon Bass added seven of his 13 points in the final two minutes to lift the Magic to a 110-105 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the preseason opener for both teams on Monday night.

Carter, who was acquired by the Magic in an offseason trade with the Toronto Raptors, scored 15 points in the third quarter. Bass was a key reserve for the Mavericks the past two seasons before signing a four-year free-agent deal with the Magic during the offseason.

Even though he only made one or two of the top 10 spots in this video, this only reminds me how much the Mavs lost when they let Brandon Bass go.

Expendable Players

by DanielDessinger on June 5, 2009

Don’t let the 2nd Round playoff appearance fool you. The Mavs need to be rebuilt. It’s a faulty system. Every single player is expendable on this Mavericks team. No one is untradeable. Dirk was untradeable in years past, but that has changed. He’s begun the downhill slope of his career, and his trade value won’t ever be this high again. You have to move Dirk while you can still get a premium player or draft pick for him.

I offered up some thoughts about Dirk on Twitter yesterday, and decided the subject warrants more attention.

I have ALWAYS said that Dirk is a bad cornerstone for the team. He’s not a bad person. He’s a top 5 scorer in the league. But he creates more problems than he solves. That, my friends, is the issue. Donnie Nelson and Mark Cuban have been blinded to the truth because they’ve been so enamored with Dirk’s elite scoring status. But success is a team sport. And Dirk makes a team vulnerable.

Let’s take a look at some of the vulnerabilities Dirk creates:

Undoubtedly, the answer must be Josh Howard. He is one of the only players with trade value and skills recognized around the league. The problem is, Josh’s PR wreck of a year last year earned him dubious status around the league. On top of that, his performance has been lackluster and he’s been injured a few times.

Will the Mavericks blow up the team and trade Dirk? Not likely, though who wouldn’t be interested in a Chris Bosh or Blake Griffin in a Mavs uniform?

Jason Kidd is old. The trade was a bad move. The Mavs shouldn’t have given up Diop and Harris. But that’s over. Time to deal with today. And today, the Bulls have the #1 pick. If they are smart, they’ll pick the point guard Rose. But if they do, they’ll have two college stars at point. Hinrich is obviously not the man of the future for Chicago. But he would fit nicely in Dallas.

Mark Cuban admitted to Randy Galloway two days ago that prior to the 2007-2008 season, the Mavericks could have traded Dirk for Kobe straight up. And yet Cuban and Nelson didn’t want him. Do what? They didn’t want Kobe? The most driven player in the entire league? The self-starter?

On top of that, Dallas could have traded Josh Howard for Pau Gasol. That was an option briefly discussed, but the Mavericks sat on it and Gasol was gone to L.A. Nice going, guys.
