Sizing up the Lions [VIDEO]

by DanielDessinger on September 29, 2011

Believe it or not, the Detroit Lions will be the biggest challenge Dallas has faced this year. Matthew Stafford is healthy and throwing out of his mind. Calvin Johnson is a top 5 receiver in the league.

Jahvid Best is showing himself to be a top 10 running back when healthy. Brandon Pettigrew, one of the players Detroit drafted thanks to the dog butted Roy Williams trade, is turning out to be a solid tight end. Nate Burleson and Titus Young are at least as good as the #2 and #3 receivers Dallas will put on the field Sunday.

Kevin Ogletree or Jesse Holley?

Laurent Robinson or Dwayne Harris?

We covered earlier this week that Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are likely out this week due to injury.

What is the most reliable combination for Monday night against Washington?

Kevin Ogletree and Laurent Robinson are the most likely starting duo. Ogletree has the most experience with the offense, and Robinson has the most experience in the NFL. Expect to see Holley on the field as well, but Harris may still be stuck in a kick returning role, especially since the Cowboys released Bryan McCann.

Dallas is about to run into some interesting times. ESPN reported last night that Miles Austin will likely miss 1-2 games with a hamstring injury. Dez Bryant is still questionable for next week. There goes your #1 and #2. Who does that leave? Let’s take a look at the current depth chart:

Wide Receiver 1

  • Miles Austin
  • Jesse Holley

Wide Receiver 2

  • Dez Bryant
  • Kevin Ogletree
  • Dwayne Harris

Let’s see that catch one more time! How Miles managed to catch, land, and lunge forward into the end zone is beyond me. Incredible effort. Check it out below.

Three quarters into Sunday’s game against San Fran, I knew what today’s post would cover:

Don’t worry about Romo. Kitna is more reliable anyway.

As I wrote last week, Miles Austin is the 2nd most important player on the team. By next year, he may be third or fourth.

But for now, it can be argued that if Miles goes down, losing him puts the Cowboys in greater jeopardy than any other player short of Tony Romo.

Clarence E. Hill Jr. reported today that Miles missed another day of practice today due to “reaggravating” a hamstring problem.

Trouble in paradise.

You can determine value in many ways. You can look at Pro Bowl appearances, stats, league-wide respect, intangibles, etc. But for the sake of today’s post, we’re looking at replace-a-bility. Which players, if injured, would be the hardest to replace on this roster?

Without doubt, Tony Romo is #1. Despite the impressive effort of Jon Kitna last season, it’s safe to say that while his leadership intangibles may outpace Romo’s, his raw physical ability is somewhat lagging. Dallas would be MOST affected by the loss of Tony Romo.

ESPN Dallas reports that as soon as the Cowboys are able to start signing players, they’ll look to eliminate three players from last year’s team:

Marc Columbo

Marion Barber

Roy Williams

You expect your star receiver to set an example for the rest of the showboaters on the team. Miles Austin has always seemed more level-headed than your usual T.O., Brandon Marshall, Randy Moss, Ochocinco #1. And yet.

As he will hear a hundred times in the next few days, you don’t risk an excessive celebration penalty after losing a game due to the SAME PENALTY the week before! You just don’t do it.

The press is clamoring to blame the head coach. Okay. Fine. Yes, he’s soft. Yes, he’s a human puddin’ pop. But this was common sense. Austin’s brain checked out while he showed of some pretty impressive hops to a nationwide audience.
