The Bengals announced this week that wide receiver Antonio Bryant has been cut. Bryant was hailed as the better wide receiver free agent choice when speculation circled over Terrell Owens. But Bryant has been injured since before the acquisition and Cincinnati has decided that the T.O. experiment was worth trying after all.

The odd thing is, Bryant never even practiced with the team. He apparently saw some minicamp action, but never looked right. Apparently, his knee never healed from offseason surgery.

With Terrell Owens, Chad Ochocinco, Jordan Shipley, and others, Cincinnati decided Bryant wasn’t worth the risk. But can they just cut him? Bryant has filed documents claiming that he was released due to injury, which is a no-no unless the team pays his guaranteed money, which it hasn’t.

It’s a strange situation. I’ve never heard of a team cutting an injured player who was guaranteed $8 million. Any guesses how this turns out?

Following last night’s loss to the Cowboys, speculation abounds as to the future of one Michael Vick. The Media did as the Media does and blew his arrival in Philly WAY out of proportion. Of course, no one really knew what he would be on that Eagles team, but it turns out that even in a heated battle with division rivals, Vick is deployed for a measly two plays. And deployed unproductively, I might add.

So what about next year? Can Philadelphia afford a backup quarterback / wildcat liason for two plays a game? Most commentators I’ve heard speculate that Philly signed him as much for trade bait than anything else. There are a slew of teams looking for quarterbacks, and Philly might get a sweet trade in the offseason.

The team I heard most speculatively was Buffalo. Trent Edwards is injured and their backup QB is nothing special. I’m not sure I see Vick as a starting quarterback anymore, but a team desperate enough to hire Terrell Owens might be willing to give Michael Vick a shot as well.

Wouldn’t that just make Buffalo the most hated team in football? T.O. haters and Vick haters united against a little bitty team in frigid northern New York. And though the type of fan hatred varies greatly between the two, I wonder if a team can survive the two most polarizing players in the NFL at the same time.

I put up a poll at the beginning of the season asking you the reader if you’d rather have Vick or Owens on your favorite team. The response was overwhelmingly pro Vick versus Owens. While Owens may be a law abiding citizen, he’s a team wrecker. And while Vick may be an ex-convict, he’s all about the team when he plays.

There’s life, and then there’s football. When it comes to the latter, I’ll take a chance on Vick. But keep Owens out of my locker room.

Prediction: Buffalo will NOT sign Michael Vick, but

even IF Buffalo signs Vick, Owens will get his walking papers.

There is no doubt that if you have follow the Cowboys in pretty much any capacity, you have heard the term “Romo Friendly” thrown around more than once as the new offensive philosophy for the Cowboys. Of course though, we all got very little info on what that term actually meant as descriptions were cryptic to say the least.

The general consensus is that “Romo Friendly” likely refers to a more balanced offensive attack than previous years.

How unbalanced were we in the past? Well, I was curious on this myself, and in a post on my blog, I broke down the amount of pass and run plays we ran. What I discovered was that since the Romo/Wade/Garrett era (starting in 2006), we’ve become more dependent on the pass, going from 51.7% pass plays in 2006, to 55.9% pass in 2007, and finally 57.7% last season.

So the question is, will this “Romo Friendly” offense truly show us balance this season? Will the absence of T.O. led to a better distribution of the ball? And most importantly, will this “Romo Friendly” offense even be effective this season? Every week this season, I will break down the “Romo Friendly” offense to the best of my ability. Obviously, we are now two weeks into this young season, so prepare for a special double dose of analysis in this weeks entry.

Week 1 @ Tampa Bay

If we want to go with pure results, the offense was most definitely clicking against the Bucs, whom definitely looked like a shell of themselves. “Romo Friendly” must have been an understatement this week as Romo had a career day going 16/27 for 353 yards, 2 TDs, and most importantly 0 turnovers.

As far as balance goes, the Cowboys went to the air 27 times and ran the ball 24 times (one of these rushes was a Romo scramble). That’s 52.9% pass for the 51 plays in the game. Not a bad balance at all to say the least; however, after the end of this game, I was left wondering on what the spread of plays would’ve looked like had the Bucs defense not given up three gigantic pass plays.

For our passing plays, Romo seemed to be spreading the ball all around the field. Roy Williams and Jason Witten tied for the team lead in times targeted by Romo with 7 each. Crayton followed right behind the pair with 6 targets. Bennett, Choice, and Austin all received two targets from Romo. Anderson rounded out the day by receiving a single toss his way. While Romo obviously had his favorites (and every QB does), he definitely made it clear Tampa was going to have to cover the entire field.

Another interesting note from this game were the new formations that the Cowboys displayed. While the Wildcat is obviously en vogue right now in the NFL and isn’t such a big shock, since Bennett like up as a WR several different times was definitely a surprise. If you happen to have any DVR footage of the game, just watch as the DBs for Tampa were scrambling to figure out just how in the world they were going to cover the giant that was all of a sudden lining up on the outside. Not only did this create a constant mismatch for Bennett, but it also created mismatches for the rest of our WR on the field, which I believe helped out in some of the major defensive lapses that Tampa suffered from.

So verdict from week 1 is all is well! This “Romo Friendly” offense is amazing!!! Well…

Stay tuned for Week 2′s verdict tomorrow.

Tonight, two of the greatest wide receivers in the league square off in a rivalry game that has massive implications for the Buffalo Bills. Should they upset, Buffalo will automatically have a shot at the #1 spot in their division.

Granted, it’s not so easy for wide receivers to have big nights whenever they want. They depend on quarterbacks, offensive lines, beating the cornerbacks, etc. Plus their quarterbacks may feel more comfortable looking to another receiver first, depending on coverage. Still, who do YOU say has the bigger night?

This just further proves that in professional sports, winning solves almost all ills. Losing draws them to the surface.

Sorry, Terrell. If you want to gloat after a game, gloat after the Steelers game. A 200+ yard game is excellent by any standards, but you did so against a mediocre defense that didn’t jam you at the line.

Until you get jammed and still show us the goods, you’re just a diva who won’t dive or jump for balls. And though the refs didn’t see it, everyone else saw your shove that gave you enough room to catch one of your longer passes yesterday.

So congratulations. You helped the Cowboys win. But did you see what Randy Moss did yesterday? ’nuff said.
