Ah, football is back and a Cowboys opening weekend win only makes things better.
Here’s my take on the Cowboys’ three-headed rushing monster: Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice. Each week I’ll analyze how each player was used during the course of the game.
And now, for Week 1:
This week against the Bucs, Marion Barber got the start and led the way with 14 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown. He was his usual Barbarian self, grinding out tough yards early, getting a couple of long runs along the way before coming in to finish off the Tampa D with the late touchdown. I really like how Barber was utilized in this game, as he wasn’t given too many carries early on so he would be fresh late in the game to bring the hammer to the defense.
Felix Jones didn’t have the impact we expected, as he finished with 6 carries for 22 yards. Those numbers are a little deceiving, as one of those carries went for 19 yards. Felix sufered a thigh bruise, which hampered his performance and versatility. Hopefully he’s ready to go Sunday night.
Tashard Choice has the distinction of being the first Cowboys player to run a play from the “Wildcat” formation in the 2009 season. The results weren’t all that good as Choice was stuffed after a 3-yard gain, but it’s good to see the formation in the Cowboys’ arsenal. Choice finished the game with 2 carries for 10 yards and was the only one of the Three-Headed Monster to catch a pass out of the backfield. Choice had 2 receptions for 6 yards. I’d like to see a little more out of Choice as I think he has some of the best attributes of Barber and Jones (strength and speed) all in one package.
Coming up this weekend, the Cowboys open up the new stadium Sunday night against the hated New York Football Giants. If you’re not able to make it out to JerryWorld, you can catch the game on NBC at 7:15 p.m.
