I bought into the hype and felt Terrell Owens had become a satisfied man in Dallas. After all, he wears The Star and plays with one of the most talented offenses in the game. And with New England’s Tom Brady going down in week one, most Monday Morning Quarterbacks felt that the Cowboys All Star wide out was this year’s heir apparent to last year’s Randy Moss like fantasy numbers. I brought my popcorn weekly to the show and thought things were good.
I also thought he and Romo had a good thing going. Romo looked into his eyes and saw his soul. But better than that, Romo would look his way more often than not on a three step drop back. If a drive stalled, afterwards Owens would selfishly demand attention on the sidelines and Romo would provide it. Owens had found a home. Or so I thought.
Then this week the unsatisfied Owens showed up. After a loss to the NL East rival Redskins, someone stuck a microphone in his face and the TO of old, the one who creates controversy and demands attention for all the wrong reasons slipped into the locker room.
“Everybody recognized that I wasn’t really getting the ball in the first half,” Owens said. “I’m pretty sure everybody watching the game recognized it, people in the stands recognized it. I think my team recognized it.”
So here we are once again with an unhappy Owens. Beloved by the media for all the wrong reasons, TO is once again front and center of a controversy. Although I will not blame him for creating this controversy; not at least this week. No, one does have to question the Cowboy game plan designed by the coaching staff.
But give it time. This is probably just a taste of things to come. If we have learned anything, not too long from now Owens will shift the focus of his dissatisfaction from himself and encompass other players, the team, the franchise, the city and fans themselves.
Maybe I’ll continue getting my popcorn ready, but not until the post game.
