The trusty stats book strikes again! This one doesn’t bode well for our beloved Cowboys. As of Week 10, the Washington Redskins are #1 in pass defense for fewest yards allowed.
To be fair to our Arlington Cows, let’s break it down. Let’s see who Washington’s played and whether the numbers are fair.
Week 1 – Loss to Giants (17-21)
Week 2 – Win over Rams (9-7)
Week 3 – Loss to Lions (14-19)
Week 4 – Win over Buccaneers (16-13)
Week 5 – Loss to Panthers (17-20)
Week 6 – Loss to Chiefs (6-14)
Week 7 – Loss to Eagles (17-27)
Week 8 – BYE WEEK
Week 9 – Loss to Falcons (17-31)
Week 10 – Win over Broncos (27-17)
Conclusion:
Let’s not ignore the fact that Washington is in shambles. The best “Shut Down” defense against the pass means nothing for a team who can’t score. Washington is still 3-6. That’s a 66% loss rate for the team who shuts down the pass. Perhaps this stat isn’t all it’s cracked up to be?
Washington’s top score in a game was 27 points last week over Denver (minus their starting quarterback). Before last week, the Redskins hadn’t scored more than 17 points in a game! That’s no joke.
The most points scored against Washington was 31 by the Falcons in Week 9. Opponents average 18.78 points against Washington. That’s a stat most defenses would be proud of. So the defense is definitely doing its job. The offense simply can’t put points on the board. Washington averages 15.56 points per game. So on average, Washington scores 3.2 fewer points per game than their opponent.
At 24.9 points per game, Dallas is 11th in the league in scoring. They SHOULD have the edge this week, but sometimes stats can’t tell the whole story. Sometimes a team regrouping mid-season approaches a single game with more heart than their opponent, despite what the record books say.
Should be an slow, grind-it-out, low scoring game. What do YOU think will happen?
